What size BMX Bike should I ride?
We’ve tracked some of the raddest BMX Groms in the world, as they’ve progressed, grown and moved from one bike size to another. These are the bike sizes that these shredders are most comfortable riding and if you want to progress like they are, have fun and stay safer – take a serious look at this BMX bike sizing guide.
Thanks to the many kids and parents, who have provided the input to help make this guide possible. One of the number one reasons – maybe the number one reason – for younger riders getting discouraged and quitting BMX, is being bought a bike for them to “grow into”. Get a bike the right size – not one to grow into!
Why do you recommend people just getting started going to the next size up? Just curious.

Hi Jeff,
The transition from one size bike to the next does have it’s challenges and can slow progression during the transition. So if you can avoid that transition there is a slight advantage. Also, when first starting, bike size (within reason) isn’t going to be so crucial for the first couple of months or so. If you’re learning to ride pump tracks (best place to start), pump transitions at skateparks and do flyouts, a moderately larger bike than you need won’t destroy progress. Seeing they are growing about 2.5″ per year, by the time they’ve been riding for 6 months, they could be pretty much on the recommended size. O yeah, it saves money too.
14″ or 16″
What would you reccomend to a 5 year old [110 cms height and 40Lbs weight], he has been on the pumptracks for about 6 months on 14″ strider.
he is an avid bmx enthusiast. can you describe advantages of a 14 and 16.
as i am in India, i need to pick one right bike for next one year. As this bike would be the most importnat thing for him to learn his tricks. He is yet to do tricks.
Many Thanks
Great guide! I noticed other guides and sources are all over the place and make little sense. My son is turning 4 next month and is 42″ tall. Looks like he would fit a 14″ nicely. Thanks for writing this.
