This BMX festival brings swamps, dirt, pallets, camping, BMX and fun together. There was a street and ramp area, dirt jumps, Subrosa rail across water and Scotty Cranmer best trick jump.
Enter Jake Rutkowitz. Jake is rad. So is his Dad. They took the road trip from eastern PA to Central Fl to have some fun. Jake had “pretty much the best weekend of my life.”
We’ve had our eye on Jake for some time now. The kid is tuff as nails, loose as can be, and always smiling. Making it though the Swampfest jumpline, is a massive achievement for a 9 year old, but Jake won the Dirt event at this years Swampfest and we couldn’t be more stoked!
Florideah Swampfest went down in Astatula, Florida on February 17.
Name: Jake Rutkowitz
Age: 9
Hometown: Palmerton, Pennsylvania
Bike set up: 16″ FBM Gypsy frame, FBM fork and bars, Profile elite hubs and mini mag cranks. Merritt stem, sprocket, pedals and grips.
What went down at Swampfest? I rode bikes, had fun! Hung out with awesome dudes and made new friends.
Next trip/plans: Pittsburgh! Next generation jam April 7th
Shout out/Thank you’d: I’d like to thank Merritt for my parts, hok9 for the sweet shirts!

Age: 6
Height: 44″ and 44 LBS
Favourite place to ride? Woodward west dirt section and our backyard ramps!
Which trick do you want to learn next? Working on so many tricks right now but the big goal is to land a tail whip before turning 7 (sooo close)
How much time do you spend on your bike in a week? We try to ride for an hour or so after school about 3 days a week and about 5 hours a day Saturday and Sunday.
Best thing about BMX? Traveling, meeting friends and the possibility of seeing the world!
Best BMX moment from 2017? Bringing home 3rd place at the hotwheels jr open and getting the call from NBC to be on little big shots with Steve Harvey
Frame / Size: 14″ Laird custom
Why did you choose that frame? The jump from a 12″ to a 16″ is huge. Caiden’s pretty small for his age and the 16 killed everything he had worked on to date with his 12”. It was a very big investment but we figured it would be a good year or more until he properly fit a 16
Forks: Colony custom cut down to size
Bars / Size: S&M cruiser bars 6.5 rise (still looking for a better fit) but their getting the job done. Already cut about 8″ off 🙂
Stem: Fit
Grips: Cult vans
Headset: Fit
Seat: We the people
Cranks: Solid bikes 95mm.
Sprocket / Number of Teeth: 9T TI rear driver, 25T aluminum sprocket
Chain: Shadow Copper
Tires: Schwable big apples
Rims: Huffy, yes you heard right, straight outa K Mart! $5 rims laced up to $500 hubs:) this was one of the harder parts of the build. There’s just nothing out there in 14” I think there like 26 spoke so we always carry a few spokes. It’s a 36 hole hub and he’s blown out plenty of them.
Front Hub: Profile Elite Kaleidoscope
Rear Hub: Profile Elite Kaleidoscope with TI hardware. Right hand drive 14mm
Pegs: Misc aluminum
Pedals: We the people plastic
Brakes: Oddessy evo
Detangler: Colony
2018 goals: compete as much as possible and land a sponsor wink wink Volcom/DC 🙂 Continue to improve and keep making new friends!

China was such an awesome experience, it starts with a really long plane ride – mine was all together 23hrs with a stop over in San Francisco, which was cool cause then I connected on the plane with Daniel Dhers… but he was in first class cause he was a pro… hopefully one day I’ll get to be up there too😆😈
It’s a really different culture and hardly anyone speaks English. When we asked the driver to bring us to the clothes market somehow we ended up getting dropped off at the fish market..lol. The toilets are actually just holes in the floor that you step over even in McDonald’s, that was definitely different. What was cool was that I went with Daniel Dyers, Alex Schuyler and Cho a Red Bull rider from Taiwan and we went to the Panda Sanctuary and were able to see so many PANDAS even babies. Plus Chengdu has some of the most amazing street spots I’ve ever seen. Me, Jaden, Alex Mollaev and Arsenay were riding all over the place.
FISE Chengdu this year had the best of the best riders because so many were coming to compete and qualify for UCI. So it was such an amazing experience to meet and ride with so many of my friends and idols from around the world. Even though a lot of us didn’t speak the same language, we all spoke BMX and we all just hung out and rode and swapped bikes, it was just such an amazing experience. Winning the gold was pretty awesome but actually we were all cheering each other on and it wasn’t the competitive vibe I’ve been feeling at other events, that’s why I took a big break from competing for a while, I just wanted to go back to riding for fun and not focus on anything else than just having fun, supporting my homies and just getting that stoke back. Meeting everyone was the highlight of the trip and I’m so glad my grandparents sent me as my grad present because I have memories for a whole lifetime.
The people in Chengdu were amazing, they kept taking pictures with me and Jaden and Iki and even kept giving me their babies to hold to take pictures with!
